Sabarimala Pilgrimage Guide

Ayyappa Yatra · 41-Day Deeksha · 18 Sacred Steps · Lord Ayyappa

1. About Sabarimala

Sabarimala is the most visited pilgrimage site in the world after the Hajj — located deep in the Periyar Tiger Reserve in Kerala, at an altitude of 914 metres. The temple of Lord Ayyappa here can only be reached on foot through the forest — approximately 5 km from the base camp at Pamba. The pilgrimage season opens every year in November–December (Mandala season) and January–Makar Vilakku, drawing tens of millions of devotees.

"Sabarimala is not just a temple visit — it is a 41-day purification, a walking meditation, and a complete surrender of the ego at the feet of Lord Ayyappa. Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa!"

2. Deeksha — The 41-Day Preparation

Every Sabarimala pilgrim must observe a 41-day Deeksha (vow) before the yatra. This is mandatory and considered the real pilgrimage — the physical trek is only its culmination.

3. Irumudi — The Sacred Bundle

The Irumudi Kettu (two-compartment bag) is the most important preparation. It must be carried on the head throughout the trek:

5. The 18 Steps (Pathinettampadi)

The 18 sacred steps are not merely physical — each represents a spiritual concept: the 18 Puranas, the 18 chapters of the Gita, or the 18 weapons of Ayyappa. Only pilgrims carrying the Irumudi are permitted to climb these steps. Ascending while chanting Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa is the moment every pilgrim trains 41 days for.
