What is Varjyam?

Varjyam (వర్జ్యం / வர்ஜ்யம்) means "that which should be abandoned." It is an inauspicious period of approximately 1 hour 36 minutes (4 ghatikas) calculated based on the day's ruling Nakshatra. Unlike Rahu Kalam which is day-of-week based, Varjyam changes with the Nakshatra.

⚠️ Varjyam is unique — it is calculated differently every day based on the Nakshatra, making it more precise than Rahu Kalam.

How is Varjyam Calculated?

Each of the 27 Nakshatras has a fixed offset (in ghatikas) from the Nakshatra's start time. One ghatika = 24 minutes. The duration is 4 ghatikas (96 minutes). The exact timing changes daily as the Nakshatra changes.

What to Avoid

All auspicious activities — including travel, new ventures, purchasing gold or vehicles, marriages, gruhapravesh, and important meetings — should be avoided during Varjyam.

Varjyam vs Rahu Kalam

Both are inauspicious, but they are calculated differently. Rahu Kalam is fixed by day of week; Varjyam is calculated from the Nakshatra. A time window free of both Rahu Kalam and Varjyam is considered ideal for auspicious activities.
