1. What is Mahashivratri?
Mahashivratri β the Great Night of Shiva β falls on the 14th night of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi) of the month of Phalgun (FebruaryβMarch). It is the most sacred night in the Hindu calendar for devotees of Lord Shiva, and one of the most important festivals in all of Hinduism.
On this night, Shiva is worshipped through the night in four prahar (three-hour watches), fasting is observed, and the Shiva Lingam is bathed with milk, honey, curd, ghee and rosewater while chanting Om Namah Shivaya.
"It is said that whoever worships Shiva on Mahashivratri with devotion, fasting and vigil β even once β attains liberation. Such is the grace of Mahadeva on this most sacred night."
2. Stories Behind Mahashivratri
The Night of the Wedding
Most popularly, Mahashivratri commemorates the wedding of Shiva and Parvati β the cosmic union of masculine consciousness and feminine energy that sustains creation. Devotees pray for marital harmony, and unmarried women pray for a husband as virtuous as Shiva.
The Lingam of Light (Lingodbhava)
On this night, Shiva manifested as an infinite pillar of light β the Jyotirlinga β proving his supremacy to Brahma and Vishnu. This is why the Jyotirlingas are especially significant on Mahashivratri.

Fast (Upvas)
Strict fast from dawn. Some take only water; others allow fruits and milk.
